Same Shit, Different Xmas

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 1071

BOBBINS - 1 [Elliot 37.]
SUTTON UNITED - 2  [Watkins 73. Gray p75]

For most people, Christmas is all about eating turkey, giving gifts and getting pissed a lot. For us, it means a local derby and a chance to inflict some misery on our dear neighbours from Carshalton. Oh and of course, we’ve been known to partake in the getting pissed bit on occasion.

Mags Mugged

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 466

SUTTON UNITED - 3  [Gray p32. Akuamouah 70. Watkins 73.]
DORCHESTER TOWN - 2   [Keeler 42.46.]

It’s nearly Christmas and that of course means it’s time for company christmas parties to appear on the scene. Problem is, mine was the night before this particular clash and inevitably involved somewhat large amounts of alcohol sunk in a rather short space of time. A bit like the average away game really, just without the football.

Can They Kick It? You Bet!

SURREY SENIOR CUP 2nd ROUND
Att: 100

FARNHAM TOWN - 1    [Hodgson 56.]
SUTTON UNITED - 3    [Vansittart 3. Gray p72. Watkins 76.]

The U’s stepped away from League action again and headed down to deepest Surrey for this county cup match. It’s our first trip to Farnham’s Memorial Ground, although our hosts have been to GGL twice in recent years.

Some Luck In 'Fruck

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 237

THURROCK - 1    [Poole 72.]
SUTTON UNITED - 2    [Gray 30. Haylock 57.]

When things ain’t going well, you need a break. A bit of luck to get you rolling again.  And if you can’t get that against a side you’ve proved a bit of a thorn in the side of for a while, when can you get it eh?

Tuesday, 7 December 2004

Bognor Boredom

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 399

SUTTON UNITED - 0
BOGNOR REGIS TOWN - 0

Having barely recovered from the excesses of the weekend trip down to Weston, 'London Cock' and all, it was back out into the cold for more underwhelming football in this midweek clash against another seaside outfit.

Saturday, 4 December 2004

Three More Go West(on)...

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 391

WESTON SUPER MARE - 2    [McGregor 23. McKeever 83.]
SUTTON UNITED - 1     [Vansittart 82.]

With Christmas looming and the U’s season still to get underway in any form, the only thing keeping us piss heads going is the promise of a couple more seaside weekenders for the football to try it’s best to ruin.

Tuesday, 30 November 2004

It's Bloody Cold!

CONFERENCE LEAGUE CUP 2nd ROUND
Att: 120

MAIDENHEAD UNITED - 2    [Smith 13. Cook p83.]
SUTTON UNITED - 4    [Akuamouah 45.54. Fear 62. Gray 68.]

Back in August, we visited York Road on a slightly warmer evening than this and after going behind early on, looked to be heading for our first win until the last minute when the ref & linesman construed to award a penalty for an offence only they saw and we left feeling just a little more than hard done by.

Football Is For Saturdays

FA TROPHY 2nd ROUND
Att: 501

WELLING UNITED - 0
SUTTON UNITED - 1    [Akuamouah 12]

A couple of weeks ago, we turned in what could technically be called a ‘performance’ at Park View Road as we slipped to another frustrating and completely giftwrapped league defeat.

Saturday, 20 November 2004

Rook Me We're Bad...

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 476

SUTTON UNITED - 3  [Scarborough 27. Vansittart 73.88.]
LEWES - 5  [Adeniyi 12.64. Moore 31. Newman 67.76.]

After the season took another turn for the worse last week at Welling, we welcomed Lewes to GGL for our next league encounter.

Utopian Vision Of Perfection

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 514

WELLING UNITED - 3    [Smith 8. Lay 28. Day 52.]
SUTTON UNITED - 2     [Boosey 3. Gonsalves 72.]

With 2 unconvincing performances over lower league oppo, you can understand us heading out to south east London for this clash with bottom of the table Welling. Their record of not having won a home game yet is also giving us the jitters. Especially as when we play such sides, you can almost always rely on the U’s to deliver the result the oppo want.

Tuesday, 9 November 2004

Dam Busters!

FA TROPHY 1st ROUND REPLAY
Att: 241

SUTTON UNITED - 4    [Watkins 5. Akuamouah 54.57. Boosey 90.]
HAMPTON & RICHMOND BORO - 1    [Inns 67.]

Having got away with it a bit at Hampton on saturday thanks to Craig Watkins intervention, we had the luxury of a second chance at GGL tonight.

Saturday, 6 November 2004

Hampton Caught

FA TROPHY 1st ROUND
Att: 330

HAMPTON & RICHMOND BORO - 1    [Ashe 9.]
SUTTON UNITED - 1   [Watkins 69.]

Having got booted out of the other FA competition this season by lower league oppo, you can probably understand that we were a little nervy about the trip over the Thames to the Beveree.

Monday, 1 November 2004

What's A Carthium?

CONFERENCE LEAGUE CUP 1st ROUND
Att: 259

SUTTON UNITED - 3    [Boosey 1. Vansittart 28. Gray p90.]
CARSHALTON ATHLETIC - 2    [Saunders 18. Hartburn 71.]

Now, as you probably realise, the highlight of our season is getting to remind that lot down the road just who’s boss in this here Borough. This year, it’s back to the good ol’ days. 2 quickfire derbies over Xmas & New Year with none of this modern rubbish about playing months apart.

Saturday, 30 October 2004

Disappointing Official

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 1140

WEYMOUTH - 1    [Phillips 69.]
SUTTON UNITED - 1     [Fear 9.]

Way back in July when the fixtures were announced, we naturally looked for all the seasidey trips first. Imagine our delight when we discovered one of our favourites, Weymouth was scheduled for a Saturday. Ok, so it’s in October, but who cares!

Tuesday, 26 October 2004

Daaahn With Margit?

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 498

SUTTON UNITED - 2 [Quinton. Akuamouah]
MARGATE - 0

With only 3 points at home from a possible 24 so far, you could easily see why for us, spending a Saturday afternoon at GGL this season has been something of a chore.

Saturday, 23 October 2004

Dull & Wet

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 457

SUTTON UNITED - 0
BISHOPS STORTFORD - 0

With the U’s participation in the FA Cup once again over far earlier that us and no doubt our bank manager would have liked, we’re back to league action with the visit of our old friends from Stortford.

Wednesday, 20 October 2004

Oggy Oggy...

FA CUP 3rd QUALIFYING ROUND REPLAY
Att: 487

BROMLEY - 2    [OG 42. OG 45.]
SUTTON UNITED - 1    [Fear 15.]

Just in case you’re wondering where the third ‘Oggy’ went, we’ve already had it. In the first game. FFS. Now, if Saturday’s performance (the second half in particular) could be described as, shall we say, ‘shit’, then I’m afraid the expletives required to describe the first half at Hayes Lane in the replay have yet to be invented.

Saturday, 16 October 2004

2-0 & We Fucked It Up

FA CUP 3rd QUALIFYING ROUND
Att: 495

SUTTON UNITED - 2   [Scarborough 3. Martin 23.]
BROMLEY - 2    [OG 43. Luckett 48.]

Admittedly, when this draw was made, we weren’t that impressed. Having been spoiled with a trip to Eastbourne in the last round and a cracking cup tie on top of a good ol’ piss up, playing Bromley at home is something of a let down.

Saturday, 9 October 2004

Club v Country

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 213

HAYES - 1    [Scott 87.]
SUTTON UNITED - 0

A few weeks before this particular fixture, Chalmers asked me if I was interested in trying to get tickets for the England v Wales World Cup Qualifying clash at Old Trafford. I agreed in principle and checked our fixtures to see which U’s game would possibly sacrificed.

Saturday, 2 October 2004

England's Number One

FA CUP 2nd QUALIFYING ROUND
Att: 611

EASTBOURNE BOROUGH - 3    [Tuck 8. Ramsay 35.64.]
SUTTON UNITED - 4    [Watkins 17. OG 55. Martin 66.70]

Now, if you’re a regular visitor in these here parts, you may have worked out fairly well what keeps our little hearts full of joy. A good game of footy and plenty of beer. Now, combine these two simple factors and make it by the seaside and we get almost as excited as a 5 year old on their way to Disneyland after too many E-numbers.

Saturday, 25 September 2004

We Havant A Clueville At Home...

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 467

SUTTON UNITED - 1    [Vansittart 63.]
HAVANT & WATERLOOVILLE - 1    [Taylor 85.]

When you suffer a mauling such as the one recieved at Grays on tuesday night, you’re obviously looking to get back on track straight away. Which is easier said than done when your home form is as cack as ours.

Tuesday, 21 September 2004

Fat Man On A Balcony

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 358

GRAYS ATHLETIC - 5  [Cole 20. Carthy 44. Thurgood p70. Griffiths 85.88.]
SUTTON UNITED - 1  [Watkins 24.]

Having faced 2 Essex sides at home in consecutive Saturdays and got sod all from either game, you can probably guess at our attitude to this trip into our (least) favourite county.

Saturday, 18 September 2004

Same Shit, Different Season

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 513

SUTTON UNITED - 2    [Vansittart 39. Watkins 59.]
REDBRIDGE - 3    [Murray 28. Poole 57. Lewis 86.]

Last season, after a reasonable start, we met Redbridge (or Ford as they were known then) at home in a dreadful game. Twice coming from behind we still managed to chuck it and lose 3-2. From then, right up to the middle of October, we were pretty shit.

Tuesday, 14 September 2004

Dave's Big Night!

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 465

BOGNOR REGIS TOWN - 0
SUTTON UNITED - 1    [Arkali 64.]

When the fixtures were initially announced, there was no small disappointment amongst the crew when it was discovered that this seasons trip to Bognor would be a Tuesday night. But that disappointment was tempered slightly with the trip to Dorchester and the weekend in Weymouth 4 days before!

Saturday, 11 September 2004

Magpie Malarkey

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 556

DORCHESTER TOWN - 2    [Groves 35. Ugarte 39.]
SUTTON UNITED - 2    [Watkins 76. Akuamouah 83.]

Ah! At last. A proper seaside trip!

The week before was a little hectic for the crew as a mini-bus was located and B&B’s were sorted. But for a change, yours truly wasn’t involved. I buggered off to Sweden for the week and left the wonderfully organised Chalmers, Greek & Windy to deal with the logistics for a change. Apparently a dozen van hire firms and approximately 75 B&B/Hotels later, we’re sorted.

A Kick In The Thurrocks

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 506

SUTTON UNITED - 1    [Watkins 60.]
THURROCK - 2    [Lee 63.76.]

Monday's amazing win in Newport has given us all a renewed sense of hope that this season could be about to turn in our favour.

We really should know better than that by now.

Monday, 30 August 2004

Wheretoisthat?

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 1080

NEWPORT COUNTY - 2 [Coates 18. Moralee 22.]
SUTTON UNITED - 4 [Martin 8. Fear 42. Gonsalves 45. Watkins 46.]

After the promising performance saturday against Hornchurch, fears of getting a spanking here, as predicted by most of us in the ‘predict the score and win points’ game (copyright: Nick the Greek) on the forum were starting to recede. Some of us even so brave as to start believing a draw was possible.

Saturday, 28 August 2004

Urchins On Top

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 553

SUTTON UNITED - 1    [Martin 14.]
HORNCHURCH - 2    [Jackson 4. Elam 59.]

Four games, no wins and some rather poor footy has hardly marked down the start of the 2004-2005 season as one that will live long in the memory.

Have We Started Yet?

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 474

SUTTON UNITED - 0
EASTBOURNE BOROUGH - 0

So, are we having fun yet? Are we bollocks. Tonight we receive the visit of the only side in the Nationwide South yet to get a point on the board. Eastbourne Borough. But don’t you worry retired seaside people, the way we’re playing we’ll have that sorted right out for you in a jiffy.

How Times Change!

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 433

BASINGSTOKE TOWN - 1    [Whiddett 44.]
SUTTON UNITED - 0

It seems so long ago that we were last here at the Camrose, handing out that last day rogering to finish runners up. All the way down in the car it was being referred to as ‘last year’, yet it was only 4 months ago!

Tuesday, 17 August 2004

Who Said Magpies Were Unlucky?

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 301

MAIDENHEAD UNITED - 2    [O’Connor 19.p89.]
SUTTON UNITED - 2    [Corbett 53. Honey 69.]

With the disappointing second half on Saturday condemning us to an opening day defeat, the crew headed to Maidenhead hoping for better things.

Saturday, 14 August 2004

Saints & Sinners

CONFERENCE SOUTH
Att: 575

SUTTON UNITED - 1    [Fear 85.]
ST ALBANS CITY - 2    [Clarke 52.78.]

What? It’s here already?? Oh bugger, it can’t be! We’re not ready yet! Tell them to come back next week.

What? We can’t? Oh arse. S’pose we’d better get it over with then....

Hot Hot Hot!

PRE SEASON FRIENDLY
Att: N/A

LEATHERHEAD  - 1   [Tavares 73.]
SUTTON UNITED - 2    [Vansittart 10. Martin 55.]

We played Leatherhead at a similar point last summer and it was hot. Fucking hot.
This year?

Hot. Fucking hot.

Let's Play 'Who The Fuck Is That?' Again!

PRE SEASON FRIENDLY
Att: N/A

DULWICH HAMLET  - 1 [Coleman 90.]
SUTTON UNITED - 1    [Gray 17.]

After the trip to Bansted, our pre-season took a turn for the worse with the cancellation of the game at Staines, then with the apparent ‘double booking’ of the Tuesday game here at Dulwich.

One question. How do you double book a pre-season friendly exactly? It's not like you're awash with fixtures with which to get confused...

Let's Play 'Who The Fuck Is That?'...

PRE SEASON FRIENDLY
Att: N/A

BANSTEAD ATHLETIC - 0
SUTTON UNITED - 4    [OG 13. Gray p59. Kennedy 75. Vansittart p78. ]

This was a game that as soon as we arrived, we just KNEW was going to be one of those poxy games played on a pitch that the likes of Chalmers & I frequent on a Sunday morning and involving god knows how many players that not even our own officials have a clue who they are or where they have come from.

Green Shoots...

PRE SEASON FRIENDLY
Att: 711

SUTTON UNITED - 0
FULHAM XI - 3    [Timlin 11. Ehui 31.70.]

With the visit of a Fulham XI our only home friendly this summer, the crew set aside nagging doubts about whether we’d have a good enough team for the big kick off in 3 weeks and went down the pub to try and kill the braincells that hosted those doubts.

Ignorance is, after all, bliss.

PRE SEASON FRIENDLY
Att: N/A

HORSHAM - 3    [Carney 44. Kirby 87. Soutar 90.]
SUTTON UNITED - 1    [Gray 12.]

As touched upon in last weeks report of our first friendly, the one overriding worry for us this summer is getting a defence to replace the one we seem to have lost to sides further up the pyramid. With Qunicy already gone, Tobi & Patsy still unlikely to return, JR has his work cut out trying to find replacements in the 3 weeks before the season itself really gets underway.

On The Subject Of A 'New Defence'...

PRE SEASON FRIENDLY
Att: N/A

HORLEY TOWN - 0
SUTTON UNITED - 3    [Gauci 29. Gray p75. Watkins 90.]

Lets face it. It’s been a shit summer.

After the highs at the end of last season, we’ve had to put up with the loss of 3 important members of an excellent squad with possibly another 2 on their way. And when you add another disappointing exit from an international tournament from our national team, you’ll get what I mean.

Final Woe(king)

SURREY SENIOR CUP FINAL
Att: 1100

WOKING - 2    [Foyweya 25. Ferguson 75]
SUTTON UNITED - 1   [Nurse 60]

Played @ Imber Court, Met Police FC

Having been seriously up for this game, it’s postponement on the Tuesday was a real downer. Then waiting 48 hours to see if the weather would hold off or not was a real pain in the arse. Everyone was looking forward to seeing just how far we’d come as a side. And also to see how we would fare against full-time oppo.

SUTTON UNITED - 5      [J.Nurse 38.49.53. Hanlan 56. Boosey 75]
HEYBRIDGE SWIFTS - 1    [Griffiths 66]

Now, Heybridge ain’t our favourite bunch. We’ve had some some frustrating encounters over the last few years and their mainly agricultural approach to the beautiful game has won them few admirers amongst the U’s faithful. But their burgers are nice.

Who Wants To Finish 2nd Anyway? Us!

RYMAN PREMIER DIVISION
Att: 613

SUTTON UNITED - 2      [Akuamouah 27. Boosey 66]
HENDON - 0

The U’s recent surge in form has firmly lodged them into the top 5 and not only that, has opened the way to something that would have seemed impossible back in September.

Finishing as runners-up.

BOBBINS - 2    [Stone 7. OG 9]
SUTTON UNITED - 2      [Bailey 25. Boosey 74]

Having got some good practice in sweeping aside poor opposition when turning over K’s on the Saturday, we were looking forward to doling out a bit more of some Xmas style arse-kicking on our ever cheery neighbours from Colston Avenue.

RYMAN PREMIER DIVISION
Att: 710

SUTTON UNITED - 4   [Fowler 19. Nurse 39. Boosey 73. Gray 79]
KINGSTONIAN - 1  [Beard 48]

Ah, it’s the Easter break. And what a busy little period this is going to be. Not only have we got both K’s and the Scummers to play inside 72 hours, we’ve also got some serious drinking to do. Still, what can we say. We didn't choose the crap Non-League life, the crap Non-League life chose us...

With Dan missing this game with some feeble excuse about some work piss up in Central London      (yes, that place twenty minutes away on the tube!!) I get free reign to go on about a load of gobbledegook for a paragraph or two once more.

It's So Threesy!

SURREY SENIOR CUP 5th ROUND
Att: 529

KINGSTONIAN - 1    [Browne 75]
SUTTON UNITED - 3   [Akuamouah 18. Bailey 27. Nurse 76]

The U’s rolled into Kingsmeadow last night on the latest leg of their ‘Score 3 and bugger off’ tour (Anyone from a big mobile phone company reading?? Marketing opportunity ahoy!) and er…..promptly scored three again and buggered off. Well, if the truth be known, maybe it was a bit more complex than that. But not much.

RYMAN PREMIER DIVISION
Att: 312

BRAINTREE TOWN - 0
SUTTON UNITED - 3     [Bailey 8. 51p. C.Nurse 63]

The home game with Braintree provided another of those dark moments from earlier in the season, with a 2-1 defeat at GGL. If the chance to avenge that result wasn’t sufficient motivation to take the points, then their recent managerial appointment certainly is.

Yes! I have returned! Having had a week off reporting duties to go & get drunk wandering around the pubs of Dublin with a Cheerleader on each arm (don’t ask…..), it’s back to my feverish ramblings and I’m hoping that Guinness doesn’t kill any more brain cells than everyday English beer does so that I'll be able to remember at least the basics of this one.

CANVEY ISLAND - 1 [OG 47]
SUTTON UNITED - 3 [Jinadu 43. Bailey 57p. J.Nurse 88]

The last couple of weeks have been a bit ropey for the U’s. Losing a long unbeaten record at Bedford, then an awful defeat at home to Maidenhead, the captain & prized midfielder having a bust up on the pitch and a narrow, but abject 1-0 win over grossly inferior opposition in the County Cup.

SURREY SENIOR CUP 4th Round
Att: 149

SUTTON UNITED - 1   [Quinton 18]

You’d think that having comfortably seeing off the pesky Bobbins in the last round without hardly breaking sweat, meeting a middling CCL team in the next round would mean we'll be breezing into the semis. Right? RIGHT?

Haunted By Haworth

RYMAN PREMIER DIVISION
Att: 491

SUTTON UNITED - 0
MAIDENHEAD UNITED - 3   [Haworth 60. Hammond 80. Flack 81]

After Tuesday nights draw, we were somewhat disappointed we’d not managed to return to winning ways against Billericay. But the match itself was somewhat overshadowed by other events.

Back To Square One

RYMAN PREMIER DIVISION
Att: 449

SUTTON UNITED - 1    [Quinton 28]
BILLERICAY TOWN - 1    [Hockton 55]

Way back in October, we made the trip to Essex looking for a vital win against a side also struggling for results. That night, Matt Fowlers goal gave us the 3 vital points we needed. And we’ve rarely looked back since with only 2 defeats in the league following that victory.

BEDFORD TOWN - 2    [Dillon 2. 62]
SUTTON UNITED - 1    [Bailey 45]

We’ve been waiting a while for this one. With our last 2 visits to Bedford turning into 2 classically top days out with drunken sillyness in abundance, we were quite looking forwards to making this trip. The fact we’re on a bloody good run a the time is purely coincidental!

SUTTON UNITED - 4    [Folwer 7.21. Bailey 9. Boosey 74]
HAYES - 1    [Holsgrove 69p]

Since the 2 sides met on the opening day of the season, Hayes & Sutton’s fortunes have varied quite a bit. And not quite how we’d have liked! From that first game, we felt fairly confident we’d go onto make an impression and Hayes, whilst hard working, lacked firepower.

HITCHIN TOWN - 2     [Bridge 42. Hutton 74]
SUTTON UNITED - 4    [Bailey 41p.80p. Fowler 45. Jinadu 51]

Back in October, we reached easily the lowest point of our season, going down 3-0 at home to an unspectacular but hard working Hitchin side. The next game was what is generally seen as the ‘corner’ or turning point of our season, the hard fought win at Billericay.

AYLESBURY UNITED - 0
SUTTON UNITED - 6    [Fowler 17.44.60.66.89. Nurse 81]

Aylesbury’s recent history certainly couldn’t be classified as boring. Even before the ‘title’ season in 1998 when they famously sacked their manager in the run in when about 10pts clear, helping our good selves to ultimately overhaul them, they’ve always seemed to have problems of some sort or another lately.

So far this season in 3 meetings with Stortford, it’s taken a penalty shoot out to seperate the sides with the other games ending level. And with both sides sitting 10th & 11th and in decent form, we’re not exactly expecting to go up there and have the 3 points sewn up inside 20 minutes.

Don't Be A Martyr...

RYMAN PREMIER DIVISION
Att: 514

SUTTON UNITED - 4    [OG 39. Bailey 40. Nurse 44.54]
ST ALBANS CITY - 2     [Browne 18. Willis 46]

It’s hard to believe that just 3 weeks ago, we were hammering the daylights out of our rivals over Xmas. As since that wonderful afternoon, our defence has slipped back to it’s bad old ways that blighted our early season form and we’ve conceded 10 goals in the following 3 contests. At least half of those being very very avoidable.

Quick, Turn Out The Lights!

FA TROPHY 3rd ROUND
Att: 701

FOREST GREEN ROVERS - 4  [Rogers 6. Grayson 35. Foster 79. Ingram 82p]
SUTTON UNITED - 0

On our first visit to this part of Gloucestershire, we were heading for our first win of what proved to be a disastrous season in the Nationwide Conference, when the lights went out. Floodlight failure robbing us of those important first 3 points in what was a long, painful campaign.

The Hangover...

RYMAN PREMIER DIVISION
Att: 409

GRAYS ATHELTIC - 3     [Thurgood p17. Youds 45. Williams 84]
SUTTON UNITED - 2    [Quinton 3. Akuamouah 55]

Still grinning like idiots after the small matter of giving the Scummers a right bloody good hiding on Saturday, we made the short trip round the M25 to Grays for our Mew Years Day clash. And this was despite our hangovers from the exertions in the pub the previous evening welcoming 2004.
